This Is How Memories Are Made: Woodcuts by Alex Gillies

Brisbane woodcut artist Alex Gillies returns with his third solo exhibition, This Is How Memories Are Made, an exploration of the fleeting moments that combine to make our personal history.

The show ranges from Wild West folklore to Australia’s underground music scene and local wildlife. The centrepiece, ‘Giant Sounds’, features a guitar that underwent a transformation into a woodblock and back into a working guitar - both the hand-coloured prints and the guitar appear in the show.

Opens Thursday May 23rd at 6pm.
Show current until June 30.

Yet I still can’t find a job … I’m running out of ideas here. The only industry I can think of going back to is sex work at a brothel, but I am so unfit at the moment and the competition is tough. I would love to strip as well, but again I need to get back into my old healthy habits.

I think I need to find a ‘regular’ job, so I can get fit and then at the end of the year, go back to sex work, plus try stripping. I just never expected to be 28 years old and pretty much useless as far as being a productive member of society.

I used to pity girls that got married and popped out babies and resigned themselves to a life of mediocrity … now I look at the shambles of my life and I can see why someone would choose the safe option in life.

Laverie Vallee (July 18, 1875 – February 6, 1949), best known by her stage name Charmion, was a Sacramento born trapeze artist who possessed strength and a physique most men would be envious of. However, she was most well known for her risqué striptease performances.

The act opened with Charmion taking the stage in full Victorian attire. She would then mount the trapeze and proceed to undress to her leotard while performing impressive and strength-dependent stunts. The act was incredibly impressive and provocative for the era. However, the controversy created by her performances did not prevent the formulation of a devoted, and mostly male, fan base.

One of her greatest fans was Thomas Edison. As a result of that adoration, on November 11, 1901 Charmion committed a simplified version of her act to film for Edison. The film, simply entitled ‘Trapeze Disrobing Act’ focused more on the erotic aspect of the performance, though a few remarkable feats of strength are featured.

When I think about suicide I think about the ocean a lot. This would be an interesting, yet horrific and painful way to go.

I can imagine being tied like this at low tide as the water slowly creeps up around my body, choking and sputtering until I’m engulfed by the waves of the ocean.
